چکیده

In this paper we present an explicit extremal characterization of the edges of the lowest band gap in gratings; we restrict here to the case of TE-modes, but the TM case can be treated similarly. The characterization is valid for linear and Kerr-nonlinear gratings, for smooth as well as for stepvariations of the index and the coefficient of nonlinearity. The variational characterization allows one to derive monotonicity properties by using simple comparison arguments. For instance, the monotonic shift of the band gap as a function of the angle of oblique incidence is proved, leading to a simple criterion for omni-directionally for the band gap. Rough estimates of the band gaps can be obtained by substituting suitable trial fields in the governing functionals, while the same formulation can also be used to design a Finite Element scheme for accurate calculations.

The effect of material nonlinearity on the band gap for TE and TM modes in square and triangular lattices

In this article, by using the method of finite difference time domain (FDTD) and PML boundary conditions, we have studied the photonic band gaps for TE and TM modes in square and triangular lattices consisting of air holes in dielectric medium and compared the results. In addition, the effect of nonlinearity of the photonic crystal background on the photonic band gaps and comparison with the re...

A periodic folded piezoelectric beam for efficient vibration energy harvesting

Periodic piezoelectric beams have been used for broadband vibration energy harvesting in recent years. In this paper, a periodic folded piezoelectric beam (PFPB) is introduced. The PFPB has special features that distinguish it from other periodic piezoelectric beams. The Adomian decomposition method (ADM) is used to calculate the first two band gaps andtwelve natural frequencies of the PF...

In-plane Band Gaps in a Periodic Plate with Piezoelectric Patches

A plate periodically bonded with piezoelectric patches on its surfaces is considered. The differential quadrature element method is used to solve the wave motion equation for the two-dimensional periodic structure. The method is very simple and easy to implement. Based on the method, band structures for in-plane wave propagating in the periodic piezoelectric plate are studied, from which the fr...
